16 August A message from the CEO: Beware changing REEF templates August 16, 2017 By Reef Admin General, REEF management 0 I always emphasise to members that they shouldn't change or modify REEF template employment agreements or commission structures without talking to us first. Why? The answer is simple. Changing a word here or a sentence there can have the effect of changing the intent of the agreement – or even worse, invalidate it altogether. Yes, REEF’s template employment agreements and the associated commission structures are extensive, detailed documents. But they are like that for very good reason. The relationship between employer and employee is a complex one, and the agreement governing that relationship needs to reflect this complexity and cover the raft of situations that may arise over time. From an employer’s perspective, the primary goal in using one of our templates is to carefully and meticulously define the terms and conditions of employment and provide the best protection in the event of an employment claim. A member recently suggested to me that REEF’s template agreements are too overwhelming for employees and that a more user-friendly two-page version would be preferable. My answer? Our agreements are so comprehensive because our statistics show that around 1 in 5 employment relationships “blow up”. REEF’s strength in defending you in an action brought by a disgruntled ex-employee primarily stems from the comprehensive nature of our template employment agreements and associated commission structures. REEF President gives annual report at AGM At the recent AGM, REEF President Fred Andriessen presented his first annual report to members and shared some of REEF's big wins during 2016. Stronger protection from REEF and Realcover REEF has formed a strategic alliance with Realcover, which is the only real estate industry-owned professional indemnity insurer in Australia. Realcover's policy carries additional coverage in the form of Employment Practices Liability (EPL) protection. REEF Treasurer presents financial statements at AGM REEF's audited financial statements for 2016 were presented by Treasurer Paul Byrne at the recent AGM, outlining the achievement of a small surplus.
