If you are, it's time to start planning. Here are some tips to help you manage employee leave during this time. The Real Estate Industry Award and the Clerks – Private Sector Award contain provisions allowing employers to send employees on annual leave because of an annual office close down. Where an employee is covered by the Clerks – Private Sector Award, you must provide four (4) weeks’ notice to them that they’ll be required to take any accrued leave over the period of the close down. While the Real Estate Industry Award does not prescribe such a timeframe, REEF recommends that the same amount of notice be given to employees covered by this award. This means you’ll need to issue the close down notice to all employees by no later than Monday, 26 November 2018. Failure to do so may affect your right to treat the period of the close down as annual leave (particularly in the case of clerical employees). Christmas school holidays To help your agency plan for the Christmas/New Year period, following are the government school holidays dates for 2018-2019. Dates may differ for private schools. Australian Capital Territory – Saturday, 22 December 2018 to Monday, 4 February 2019 New South Wales – Saturday, 22 December 2018 to Tuesday, 29 January 2019 Queensland – Saturday, 15 December 2018 to Monday, 28 January 2019 South Australia – Saturday, 15 December 2018 to Monday, 28 January 2019 Tasmania – Friday, 21 December 2018 to Tuesday, 5 February 2019 Victoria – Saturday, 22 December 2018 to Tuesday, 29 January 2019 Related Changes to annual leave provisions now in play In an important decision by the Fair Work Commission, annual leave provisions in modern awards have been varied to provide greater administrative flexibility. The changes apply from the first pay period on or after 29 July 2016.
